Happy almost Happy Halloween! Celebrate with these homemade paleo dark chocolate almond butter cups. You won’t want to share these with anyone. 😉
What was your favorite candy to find in that bowl at your neighbors house while trick-or-treating? Mine was either Milk Duds, Milky Ways, or Reese’s peanut butter cups (which lead the pack)! I would throw the Reese’s in the freezer for a few minutes and then bite in! Why is chocolate from the freezer so much better? Any food science people out there?
But you know what, conventional candy has so much sugar and artificial flavors and preservatives that I haven’t had any in such a long time. I wanted to make my own primal and unrefined almond butter cups. Tis the season right? Cozy up with chocolates while watching Hocus Pocus… you can find me on the couch doing just that tomorrow. Savoring these delightful almond butter cups!
Melted 100% cocoas leaves no room for added sugar. You get to decide how sweet (or not) you want to make your almond butter cups by adding in maple syrup. I wouldn’t add coconut sugar because then the chocolate won’t be smooth enough for a fine finish. A few tablespoons of coconut oil to make the chocolate as smooth as silk.
Moving onto the star of the show, the gooey almond butter filling! I used 100% almond butter. Check your ingredients, the only one on the list should be ALMONDS. Likely these are the nut butters that have separated and need some stirring before using. A lot of almond butters are already sweetened with cane sugar and highly salted so I either opt to make my own or buy pure almond butter.
You do get to sweeten up the filling by adding maple syrup to keep this paleo. Just stir the two together and you have a most delicious filling. Hands off husband, these are for the cups!
These dark chocolate almond butter cups would also be a great treat to make with kiddos (just under supervision because you do need melted molten chocolate). But how cool for them to learn how to make a favorite candy! Not to mention a great option for you people out there with peanut allergies. Almonds to the rescue! If you have a severe nut allergy maybe try sunbutter in these cups.
This 5 ingredient vegan and paleo dark chocolate almond butter cup recipe will make you hoard and not want to share! Seriously. I almost didn’t tell my husband I made them. Make these instead of snacking on left over candy your kiddos bring home. Send those to work the very next day!
